Grading Policy
Students are graded, as if they were at a job, on a 20 point scale for their daily grade based on qualities and characteristics that suggest good employee behavior, such as doing their job, using their time wisely, being productive. I dock them in 5 point increments for tardies, poor use of time, or unproductive visiting, etc. Time is money for an employer.
Paying attention to detail is also a crucial factor for an employee. Mistakes and poor quality can cost an employer. Therefore, I grade three random assignments out of every chapter on a very strict scale. Perfect work with zero errors earns a 10 point grade or 100%. One error equals a 9 point grade or 90%. Two to three errors equals a 7 point grade or 70% and more than three errors equals a 5 point grade or 50%. The students get one chance to correct those papers into a perfect paper using the proofreading symbols provided below. If they are successful, they can raise the point value 1 point or 10 percentage points. If they are unsuccessful, their point grade stays the same.
The remaining assignments for each chapter are based on a 5 point scale for whether or not they got the gist of the assignment, but if there are too many errors or they did not understand the concepts of the assignment, they will earn a Show Me grade and rework the assignment until they have proven that they do understand those concepts.
